What is Lacey Act?

A US law banning trade in illegally harvested plants and wood that also requires an import declaration of species and harvest country for many wood goods.

Since its 2008 amendments, the Lacey Act makes it illegal to import plants and plant products, including timber and wood products, taken in violation of US or foreign law. It also requires a plant and plant product declaration at import, listing the scientific name (genus and species) of the wood, the country of harvest, quantity and value. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) administers the declaration.

The declaration requirement has been phased in by HTS code and now covers many wood products, including much wooden furniture. Check the current APHIS implementation schedule for your product.

For furniture made from several woods or components, get species and harvest-country details from the factory before shipping, because tracing them takes time. Importers are expected to exercise due care, and a false declaration is itself a violation.
