What is PI (Proforma invoice)?

A preliminary invoice a supplier issues before production or shipment that sets out the goods, price, terms and bank details for the deposit.

A proforma invoice (PI) is the supplier's offer in invoice form. It typically lists products and specifications, quantities, unit prices, the Incoterms rule and port, payment terms, lead time and the bank account for payment. In China trade, the buyer often signs or stamps the PI and pays the deposit against it.

A PI is not the commercial invoice. US customs entry normally relies on the commercial invoice issued when the goods ship, which must reflect the actual transaction. A proforma can stand in only in limited cases under CBP rules, so leave that call to your customs broker.

Before paying, check that the beneficiary on the PI matches the company you checked and signed with. A last-minute change of bank account is a classic fraud signal; confirm any change by phone with a known contact.
