What is Section 232 tariffs?

US duties imposed on national security grounds under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, covering goods such as steel, aluminum, copper and wood products.

Section 232 lets the President adjust imports after a Commerce Department investigation finds they threaten national security. Duties have been imposed on steel, aluminum and copper and many products made from them (called derivatives), and on timber and lumber products, including upholstered wooden furniture and kitchen cabinets and vanities. New investigations can add further product groups.

Unlike Section 301, Section 232 duties are not limited to China: they generally apply whatever the country of origin, although some countries have negotiated different terms. For metal derivatives, the duty can depend on the metal content of the product.

Rates and product lists have changed often. Check the current proclamations and CBP guidance for your HTS code, and ask your broker how Section 232 interacts with other duties on the same product.
